About ‘Staircase between City and Time – Buitenom - Zuidwal, The Hague’ by Robert Jan Smit

On the edge of the Zuidwal, on the corner with the Buitenom in The Hague, lies a small part of the city that is easily overlooked. Yet it is precisely such a place that reveals a great deal about the rhythm of everyday life. A simple staircase connects two levels of the street here, flanked by sturdy brickwork and surrounded by bicycles taking a brief rest before their next ride begins.
The black-and-white treatment of this photograph emphasises the structure of the old brickwork and the subtle lines of the banisters. The light falls diagonally across the steps, creating a play of shadows that lends the scene an almost graphic quality. The bicycles at the top seem like silent witnesses to the constant movement so characteristic of The Hague. People come and go, but the stones and steps remain.
In the background stand characteristic Hague façades, reminiscent of this neighbourhood’s rich urban history. The Buitenom has been an important route through the city for centuries, whilst the Zuidwal has retained its own, almost hidden character. Together they form a place where history and everyday city life meet.
This photograph captures a moment of tranquillity in a city that is constantly in motion. No heavy traffic, no hurried pedestrians – just the interplay of light, stone and metal. It is precisely this simplicity that makes the image recognisable and timeless.
For those familiar with The Hague, it evokes memories of strolls through old streets and unexpected corners. For those who do not yet know the city, it offers an invitation to discover its hidden details.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
