Stand-up paddling can be traced back to several origins. Firstly, Polynesian fishermen off the coast of Tahiti used to paddle their canoes standing up on the sea. In Asia, one-man bamboo rafts are still in use, where paddles are used in addition to poles while standing. On the other hand, in the 20th century, surf instructors in Hawaii used stand-up paddles to get from the shore to the wave-breaking reefs and back more quickly with their surfboards.
In the 2000s, stand-up paddling developed into a sport in its own right, independent of wind and waves, and became increasingly popular as a leisure sport.
