Stania State winter 2. Staniastate in Oentsjerk. Winter perils.
Stania State is a Frisian state or stins in Oenkerk, a village in the municipality of Tietjerksteradeel. The state is located in the Stania Park at the Rengersweg (in that part a branch of the N361). In Oenkerk, the Staniasingel is named after this state. Stins and surroundings are included in the register of national monuments.
The first castle dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and was built by order of Jeppe Stania. The estate subsequently passed to the Van Heemstra, Van Haersma and De With families. After a fire that completely destroyed the residence in 1813, a new state was built for Theodorus Marius Theresius Looxma in 1843. The garden was laid out under the direction of Lucas Pieters Roodbaard.
At the end of the nineteenth century the state was the summer residence of Wilco Julius van Welderen Rengers and his wife Catharina Theresia Looxma, who stayed in their town house in Leeuwarden during the winter.
In the twentieth century the State served for many years as a country house of the Frisian Museum, boarding school of the agricultural college and youth hostel. The building has been owned by the municipality since 1977 and the Forestry Commission owns the park. There is a restaurant in the monument.
