In 1566, work was completed on a stone bridge to replace the shaky wooden bridge over the Neretva. This bridge, the Stari Most or the "Old Bridge", was a masterpiece of Baroque Ottoman architecture, by Turkish architect Mimar Hajrudin.
In spring 1993, fierce fighting broke out in Mostar between Croats and Bosniaks as part of the Croat-Bosniak War. In November that year, the Stari Most was destroyed.
The bridge, which was shot to pieces during the war, was rebuilt after the war with help from Turkey and the Netherlands, among others. The opening took place on 23 July 2004. In 2005, the historic part of the city, including that bridge was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
