Since 1954 at the head of the Afsluitdijk near Den Oever stood a statue of Cornelis Lely, made by sculptor Mari Andriessen and unveiled by Queen Juliana. The statue stood along the road over the Afsluitdijk and Lely looked out over his life's work: the Wieringermeerpolder and the IJsselmeer, with Flevoland behind the horizon.
Due to the doubling of the road, Lely was placed in the central reservation. In February 2004, Rijkswaterstaat removed the sculpture from the pedestal. On 9 May 2007 the statue was reinstated in the vicinity of the monument on the Afsluitdijk. The official unveiling, on the occasion of the dike's 75th anniversary, was carried out on 24 May 2007 by Prince Willem-Alexander.
