Quince is a 'forgotten' fruit, it looks like a cross between apple and pear. A warm yellow skin with downy hairs, beautiful folds and shapes that look a bit old-fashioned.
The botanical name is Cydonia, the quince originates from the Minoan city of Kydonia (now Chania) on the island of Crete. Now in autumn the harvest of these fragrant fruits coincides with that of the walnuts. The walnuts still have to dry for a few weeks and the quinces, which cannot be eaten raw, are processed into jelly, jam and quince sweets.
