Stone men, are inseparable from the culture in the mountains and you can find them everywhere. Nowadays many stone men are built by tourists for fun, but traditionally stone men have not had such a fun meaning at all. In many places they are important or even sacred sites.
The ancient Greeks were already concerned with stone men. According to one myth, the god Hermes and the goddess Hera were involved in a lawsuit. Several gods who were watching were allowed to express their opinion about the trial by throwing a stone at the god, who they thought should be acquitted. Hermes so convinced the gods that he was buried under the stones: the first stone man was born. But also in Scandinavian and Celtic mythology stone men play an important role. They were the places where trolls, elves and other mythical mountain dwellers lived.
