Strange Bird or Weird Duck. Variegated in colour Inspired by a Mandarin duck.
The mandarin duck is a small species of duck. Males of this colourful bird have a dark red bill, a long, drooping crest, chestnut-coloured sideburns, a white eyebrow stripe running from the eye to the neck and it has two gold-coloured sails on its wings, which can be put up to impress females and other males. Females and young are brownish grey with light spots on the breast and flanks. They have a prominent white patch behind the eye and a white chin. The mandarin duck is a silent bird, with only the male making a whistling sound.
Where can you find such'a motley duck?
Originally, the mandarin duck is an Asian bird that nests in abandoned woodpecker nests at high altitudes. Mandarin ducks have been kept as ornamental waterfowl for several hundred years. Feral populations occur in western Europe.
