The Sukhoy Soe-33 (Russian: Су-33) (NATO code name: Flanker-D) is a multi-role fighter jet of the Russian Navy. A further development of the Su-27, the aircraft was developed by Sukhoy and built by KnAAPO. 24 production models were built, all of which served aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov. The Su-33's are out of operational service.
The aircraft is similar in many respects to the Soe-27. Most changes were made to make the aircraft suitable for carrier use. For instance, the landing gear has been strengthened and the nose wheel has a second wheel. Also, the wings and stabilo's are foldable to save space in the ship's hangar. The aircraft is also equipped with a hook to catch catch cables and has been given front wings to provide extra stability when taking off from the ramp aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov. In addition, the aircraft has advanced avionics on board that enable it to land automatically. Furthermore, the Soe-33 introduced the possibility of air-to-air refuelling, either from a refuelling aircraft or from another Soe-33 via the UPAZ-1A pod.
