The astronomically determined beginning of the summer is the summer solstice (around June 21 in the northern hemisphere and around December 21 in the southern hemisphere). The Sun then passes through the summer point, the Sun reaches its highest position above the horizon that day, and the day lasts the longest. The summer ends with the autumnal equinox (around September 23 in the northern hemisphere and March 20 in the southern hemisphere).
