Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed sights in the UK. With this dreamlike location in this beautiful landscape, this is of course not surprising.
I took the picture in 2016 during a road trip through Scotland.
To avoid the crowds of tourists, we returned to the castle specifically for sunset. This was a good decision, because by now the tides on Loch Duich ensured that the headland on which the castle is built became an island. Only the bridge still connected the island with the castle to the mainland.
The sky had already closed in and the dark clouds hung low over our heads. There was a real storm brewing. In between, however, the light kept breaking through the cloud deck for brief moments, creating a spectacular atmosphere.
The rain started lightly, but that didn't bother me much because the conditions were so excellent for photography. Then as I turned around I noticed a very colorful double rainbow behind me. That really was the cherry on top of the cake. An unforgettable moment and one of the most impressive sunsets I have seen to date.
