Tane Mahuta on New Zealand's North Island is the oldest (known) living kauri tree (genus: Agathis australis) and one of the largest in the world. The exact age is unknown, but it is estimated to be between 1500 and 2000 years old. It is over 51 metres high and has a circumference of almost 14 metres near the ground. Standing next to the tree makes you feel tiny.
Unfortunately, New Zealand's kauri trees are now highly endangered by the so-called "kauri dieback disease". Affected trees suffer from root rot, which leads to tree and even forest death. We must finally realise how important our forests are, especially nowadays, and that they need to be protected.
