Pink balloons float languidly through the air, as if moving lightly with an invisible breeze. A woman, in hushed mourning, stands in the middle of the scene. Her pose is subdued, her gaze seems to rest on an indeterminate point in the distance.
Ears rise from the sand, as if the ground is listening, like silent witnesses. Between them lie skulls, the remains of those who may not have listened closely enough, or just too much. A strange tension emerges between the calm and the underlying menace.
The beauty of discomfort plays a major role in my work. I am fascinated by contrasts, the absurd interwoven into the everyday, the softness of colours clashing with the subcutaneous tension of symbolism. This work creates a world that at first glance seems lovely and almost dreamlike, but where an inexplicable sense of confusion lurks.
