In the 15th century, distinguished families from the Pastrovici region decided to settle on the island and build a fortified town there. It had become a fishing village and trading centre and its inhabitants felt safe from the Turks and pirates. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century more and more inhabitants left Sveti Stefan (and Montenegro, often to the United States of America) in search of a better life. A few years ago the hotel island was privatized and converted into a luxury hotel. The complex consists of 118 villas still in authentic architecture on the outside, but on the inside full of luxury with spa & wellness facilities.
