In the upper part of the picture, an idyllic waterscape unfolds, dotted with lush, green lilies gently floating on the serene water. This soothing scene is dramatically interrupted by three large, green umbrellas pointing down in the foreground, like a bridge to another world. The umbrellas create a surprising transition to Nijmegen's lively city centre, visible on the horizon. The urban elements contrast sharply with the calmness of the water landscape.
Under the umbrellas are three figures: a woman, dressed in contemporary clothing, and two transparent ghosts with vague, ethereal contours. Each of them carefully holds an umbrella, as if guarding an invisible link between nature and the city. The woman looks determinedly ahead, while the ghosts have a melancholic, almost dreamlike presence, evoking a sense of mysticism and transience.
