The "palace of the crown" in Persian, an Islamic white marble mausoleum or tomb for Shah Jahan and his wife in Agra (Uttar Pradesh). Surrounding the building is the famous garden.
This picture was taken while India was still part of the British Empire.
The magnificent mausoleum, built in white marble, is central and surrounded by symmetrical gardens. The large central dome and four surrounding minarets are clearly visible, although the shot has a subdued sepia or black-and-white tone, emphasising the historical nature of the image.
The picture appears to be taken from an elevated perspective, making the path leading to the Taj Mahal, as well as parts of the surrounding nature, clearly visible. All this creates a sense of tranquillity and harmony. The ancient photographic process adds an extra layer of nostalgia to this impressive depiction of a timeless wonder of the world.
