With its backdrop of international Tall Ships, SAIL Amsterdam is the largest public event in the Netherlands. Since 1975, SAIL has also grown into Europe's largest free nautical event. Every five years, over 600 ships sail through the North Sea Canal to moor in and around the IJhaven. From 19 to 23 August 2015, SAIL will be organised for the ninth time.
This Tall Ship ? owned by the Indian Navy ? was launched on 1 December 1995. She was commissioned on 11 November 1997. In 15 years, she has undertaken very many long sea voyages totalling 188,000 nautical miles, in 13 different world voyages. With 2,100 sea days and 74 ports in 39 countries, this has enabled many young cadets to receive their sail training and grow into true seafarers. The objective of the Indian Navy is team building and character building, as well as introduction to other cultures and customs. This is actually being realised. The young cadets are ready for their further military training when they return to India after many months. The Tarangini is 54 metres long and has a draft of 4.5 metres.
