This picture shows a beautiful tawny owl (Strix aluco) hiding in a tree cavity in the Veluwe, one of the Netherlands' most famous nature reserves. With its brown mottled plumage and round dark eyes, the tawny owl blends almost completely into its surroundings, camouflaging perfectly against the tree bark. Known for its distinctive call, this nocturnal predator hunts mainly small mammals, birds and insects.
The Veluwe is rich in forests, moors and sand drifts and provides an ideal habitat for the tawny owl. During the day it often rests hidden in tree cavities, while at night it searches for food. Its keen hearing and silent flight make the tawny owl an excellent hunter.
For nature lovers and photographers, being able to observe a tawny owl in its natural habitat is a special moment. This picture highlights not only the beauty of the owl itself, but also the valuable biodiversity of the Veluwe. The image symbolises the mysterious and peaceful side of Dutch forest life.
