About ‘Tempora Mutantur’ by J.O. Han

"Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis", which means: Times change, and we change with them.

A contemporary artwork that spectacularly brings the centuries-old tradition of the 17th-century Vanitas still life into the 21st century. Whereas classical masters chose hourglasses and burnt-out candles to symbolise the transience of life, this artwork introduces the icons of our current digital culture: a smartphone, an e-reader and modern earphones.

Tradition meets Pop Art; the bold use of colour gives the classic Memento Mori theme a unique, Pop Art-style dynamism.

The Latin sayings ‘Sic transit gloria mundi’ (Thus passes the glory of the world) and ‘Tempora mutantur’ remind us that everything around us — however modern or technologically advanced it may be — is ultimately temporary.
