Terracotta Abstract Painting: Column of Earth and Light by Surreal Media

This wide, elongated work is structured like a column: layers of terracotta and dark red build up on the left to form a powerful block, with olive green and sun-bleached white gently running through it. In the centre, I have left a narrow strip of unpainted linen, like a pause for breath between two gestures. If you look closely to the right, you’ll discover a row of small, faint silhouettes receding across a plain, almost invisible in the haze, as if somewhere far away a herd of animals were quietly making its way.

This work is inspired by a Mediterranean atmosphere: warm, earthy and relaxed, with loose, gestural layers that look like washes of ink laid one on top of the other. Interior designers often recommend using these kinds of warm, earthy tones in spaces that call for relaxation, and that idea fitted perfectly with what I wanted to evoke. The atmosphere remains cool and spacious despite the warmth of the colours: it is a combination of strength and tranquillity. The message is clear: less is more; tranquillity arises in the space between the brushstrokes, not in the bustle of them. It evokes balance, and a kind of clear calm that slowly washes over you.

Technically, it is a digital artwork, with the appearance of loose, torn layers of ink that lie in a tranquil procession across the wide canvas.

Hanging above a sofa in the living room, or in a long corridor, this piece creates a sense of space and depth, evoking memories of warm, sun-drenched landscapes and the tranquillity of an empty plain. It also has a calming effect in an office or hall for those who appreciate open, earthy spaces. Or take a look at: "Perzik Abstract Schilderij: Eén Druppel Dauw in Golvend Licht" our latest addition!
