Alessandro Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli, was a painter of the Italian Renaissance. His most famous works "The Birth of Venus" and "La primavera" date from the 15th century and hang side by side in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Two immensely large and detailed canvases, with numerous flowers. The Venus of the first mentioned painting has been shining on the Italian currency for ages. The wavy hair of this typical Botticelli lady captures the imagination of many.
In this portrait, Venus is completely removed from her familiar surroundings. We no longer need the complete work to be able to see the entire painting in our minds. Worked out in a fairly monochromatic color contrast with clear pink gray as the overtone, with Venus still central to the composition.
The loose, playful touches give this work a spontaneous and modern character. An old master, a true classic, in a new guise.
