The Downs are the rounded chalk hills in southern England. The name downs comes from the Old English dūn, meaning hill.
This painting came about after spending some time in the beautiful rolling countryside of Wiltshire in southern England. It's created from memory / imagination. I wanted to create an impression of the place rather than portray a specific location, so the scene could really be anywhere with a gently rolling landscape.
Rolling hills bathed in golden sunlight fill the lower part of the scene, with a solitary tree standing near the center-right. Heavy mist sits in the mid-ground, blending seamlessly into a dramatic, cloudy sky tinged with orange hues of dawn or dusk.
