About the artwork

The golden dragon ("d'n Draok") on the dragon fountain in Den Bosch is an iconic image and the first thing you see when you walk from Central Station into the city center of 's-Hertogenbosch. In popular speech it is called 't statue for the mothers-in-law, but in real life the dragon is a reference to the nickname Den Bosch used to have: the swamp dragon. 's-Hertogenbosch is namely traditionally partly located in a swamp area. The area around the city could easily be flooded and was therefore considered an impregnable fortress.

In this work I made a little joke with d'n Draok. Symmetry always gives something soothing in a photo and I thought it would be fun to have the dragon look at his own reflection as a kind of battle. The inhabitants of Bosschen are known for having a big mouth: which inhabitant of Bosschen/Dragon has the biggest mouth?
