The Egyptian widow, Lourens Alma Tadema, 1872.
The Frisian artist Alma-Tadema caused a stir in England and was even knighted there. He is one of the most beloved painters of the 19th century because of his imagination of the Egyptian and Roman past. In this painting, full of archaeological details, a woman mourns at the inner mummy box with the body of her husband. His sarcophagus is already standing by on the left, while priests and singers are complaining.
