About "The Euromast"

by Eus Driessen

About the artwork

The Euromast became the Floriade in 1960 by architect Huig Maaskant and contractor J.P. Van Eesteren put down in Het Park, near the entrance of the Maastunnel.

The building was officially opened by Princess Beatrix on March 25, 1960. The location was strategically chosen; Who drove to Rotterdam over the highways then saw the (107m high tower) 107m high tower just above the city. After the opening, the city continued to grow and the buildings became higher. After a few years, buildings over the Euromast rose, as in 1968, the building of the Medical Faculty on the West Sea Dike, ten meters higher.
Space Tower

In 1970 a 85 meter high construction was placed on the Euromast; the Space Tower, with which the Euromast became the tallest building in Rotterdam. The tower now has a total height of 185 meters. Visitors can use the Euroscoop, an ice-skating lift, from the Euroscoop deck at 112 meters to the highest point at 180 meters. Visitors are brought to the original highest point with two lifts that take four meters per second.
