About ‘The Fall of the Rebel Angels (Très Riches Heures) – Limbourg Brothers’
This dramatic miniature depicts the fall of Lucifer and his angels, a cosmic moment full of movement and symbolism. At the top, God is enthroned in a radiant mandorla, surrounded by choirs of angels in Gothic heavenly architecture. Below, blue, gold and white-winged angels plunge downwards, their bodies twisted into graceful but chaotic poses, while flames envelop them. The transition from order (above) to fall and fire (below) is visually sharply separated by colour and composition. The ultramarine blue – an extremely precious pigment – emphasises the divine atmosphere. The creators, the Limbourg brothers (Paul, Jean and Herman), were court artists to Jean de Berry and brought unprecedented refinement to book illumination: elegant figures, spatial suggestion and emotional expression. Their work combines Gothic spirituality with early naturalistic observation. This scene is not only theological, but also visually spectacular: a medieval representation of cosmic catastrophe in miniature format.
