While staying in (Dutch) Limburg, I got the idea to look for traces of the mines in Limburg. Unfortunately, much of our industrial heritage has been wiped out, and during my research I came across the mining complexes in Belgian Limburg. A much better example of how to deal with your industrial heritage. At the mines of Genk, Zolder and Beringen, you can still find (part of) the original mine buildings. Some of these are in a distant state of disrepair, while others are being restored, have been transformed into a mining museum or have been given a different purpose. For example, the Genk mine now houses a cinema, the Beringen mine the mining museum and they are working on a restoration plan, and in Zolder, for example, the air building is now set up as a museum and several other buildings have been given a new purpose.
