About "The Giant's Causeway"

by Bram de Jong

About the artwork

The Giant's Causeway is a rock formation on the north-east coast of Northern Ireland (Bushmills) made up of some'000 basalt columns. The formation has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The rocks are thought to have been formed in a volcanic eruption some'60 million years ago.
Legend has it that Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) built a path through the sea (causeway) into Scotland to fight with his Scottish counterpart Benandonner. The moment Fionn arrives in Scotland, he sees that Benandonner is even more gigantic than himself and he flees back to Ireland. Arriving there, pursued by the Scottish giant, McCool asks his wife to disguise him as a baby. The moment Benandonner arrives in Ireland, he sees the woman with the baby, startled by the size of the child, assuming that the father of such a large child will be many times bigger and stronger than himself, and he flees back to Scotland. On his flight, Benandonner destroys the path. Only the beginning in Ireland and the end in Scotland (Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa) remain.
