The Grey Goose: Between Reality and Reflection by Acharya Fotografie

A grey goose stands motionless in the shallow water. With its neck outstretched, its beak gently touches the mirror-smooth surface. The touch of the water creates fine, circular ripples which spread out and break the perfect stillness.

The soft evening light is gently reflected in its plumage, bringing out the pattern on every single feather. The fine, light-coloured horizontal lines on its breast and flanks stand in harmonious contrast to the dark wings, whilst the vivid orange legs and beak are the only warm splashes of colour shining out from the cool blues and greys.

An almost perfect reflection forms beneath the goose. For a moment, it is almost impossible to tell where reality ends and the reflection begins. Only the concentric circles on the water’s surface reveal that the image is alive and constantly changing. Even the grasses towering above the water are subtly reflected, framing the scene without disturbing its tranquillity.

The composition thrives on its simplicity. No hustle and bustle, no distractions – just the animal, the water, the special light and the reflection, which seems almost surreal in its clarity. For me, this is precisely where the magic of nature photography lies: not in capturing the moment, but in preserving a memory of something that will never happen again in exactly the same way.
