On the Suriname river deep inland, near a village of the Maroons (descendants of escaped enslaved people) stands a sacred Kankantri tree.
In Suriname, the Kapok tree is called a Kankantri tree and is considered sacred by many Afro-Surinamese. Indeed, it is said to be an abode of spirits. The Kankantrie tree is therefore rarely felled, and if it does have to be felled, it is done very carefully with an elaborate ritual.
