The Little Pilot Over Golden Rooftops

by Jan Keteleer

I painted this scene from a place deep inside me, where childhood still lives and anything can fly. A young boy sits in the open cockpit of a plane built from weathered planks, corrugated metal, and stubborn hope. His denim overalls, dented helmet, and oversized aviator goggles tell me he believes completely. Two toy rockets are strapped to the wings, and the wooden propeller spins in a blur of motion.

Below him, four friends stand in the grass, faces turned upward in pure astonishment. One watches with his mouth open, another with hands in his pockets, leaning back to take it all in. In them I see us all: the dreamer and the witnesses, bound together by one shared moment of wonder.

I chose an Impressionistic, oil-on-canvas style with thick, visible brushstrokes so the scene would feel remembered rather than recorded. The setting sun pours amber, gold, and terracotta across the tiled roof, while slate blues drift through the clouds. Behind the boys, warm windows glow like a promise of home.

For me, this painting is about the courage to imagine. It reminds me that our dreams grow stronger and fly higher when others dare to look up with us.
