The Mahi Mahi’s Leap by Renata Rolefes Art

‘Leap of the Mahi Mahi’ captures an explosive moment in which a colourful mahi mahi leaps out of the Caribbean Sea at full speed. The water sprays high into the air as the fish makes its impressive leap, surrounded by flying fish that heighten the dynamism of the scene. The vibrant shades of green, blue, yellow, orange and pink give the mahi mahi its distinctive tropical appearance and make the energy of the ocean almost palpable.

The waters around Curaçao are among the most beautiful fishing grounds in the Caribbean. The mahi mahi, also known as the golden mackerel or dolphinfish, is renowned for its speed, power and spectacular leaps above the water’s surface. That brief, powerful moment when the fish completely breaks free from the sea was my inspiration for this painting. For me, the mahi mahi symbolises freedom, perseverance and the courage to seize opportunities when they arise.

For this piece, I built up multiple layers of acrylic paint using palette knives, expressive brushstrokes and energetic splashes of paint. The rich texture gives the fish extra depth and literally brings the splashing water to life. The combination of bright shades of blue and vibrant colours creates a painting full of movement and contrast.
