Not every dispute is settled by a judge. Sometimes all it takes is a single wise figure who can calm both parties down. In *The Mediator* from 1651, Apollo van Rijn depicts a surprising scene in which it is not a learned man, but a stately ginger tomcat who fulfils the role of peacemaker.
On either side of the table stand two people who are clearly embroiled in a disagreement. The older woman points an accusing finger, whilst the younger woman holds out her hand as if trying to explain her side of the story. Seated between them is the imposing tomcat, imperturbable and dignified. His gaze betrays no favouritism; he merely listens, weighs up the situation, and seems likely to speak only when the truth has revealed itself.
The warm light falling upon his long coat makes him the natural focal point of the composition. Beside him rests a lute, an age-old symbol of harmony. The instrument is not being played, but serves as a reminder that true harmony is achieved through listening rather than speaking.
Like so many of Apollo van Rijn’s works, this painting also possesses a dual layer of meaning. At first glance, it is a humorous scene in which a cat is assigned the role of mediator. But those who look more closely will discover a timeless story about patience, wisdom and the search for balance between opposing viewpoints.
*The Mediator* is an ode to diplomacy, wrapped in the warm colours and dramatic lighting of the Dutch Golden Age. It is a painting that brings a smile to the viewer’s face, yet at the same time invites reflection on how conflicts are truly resolved.
Any resemblance to Gerard van Honthorst’s ‘The Matchmaker’ is purely coincidental.
