About ‘The Old Harbour Rotterdam’ by Anthony Malefijt

The Old Harbour in Rotterdam during a beautiful sunset.

After the Rotte was dammed by the Middeldam near what is now Hoogstraat, a stub of the river remained to the south, connected to the Meuse and surrounded by marshland. The first jetty was built here around 1350.

Since around 1980, the Oude Haven has been an entertainment area with cafés and restaurants with terraces on the waterfront, close to the cube houses, the Witte Huis and the adjacent Marine Museum. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences has a branch in the neighbourhood.

The Oudehaven is not the oldest harbour in Rotterdam; that was actually a jetty in the canal south of the Middeldam. That canal still exists in part as the Steigersgracht, but at the time it was aptly named 'Steyger'.

The Oudehaven is also home to the Koningspoort museum shipyard. The Oudehaven is connected to the Wijnhaven on the west side and to the Haringvliet on the east side.

Anthony Malefijt is a passionated hobby photographer based in Rotterdam. He spends most of his time capturing landscapes in his own unique way. He is a self taught photographer who was born and raised in the beautiful city Rotterdam in Holland. Photographing the city with his first Nikon D3200 DSLR is where the passion for photography started. Now a few years later (and cameras, haha) it's not only cities anymore. Landscape photography is the main focus at this moment.
