The Oldehove (from the Torenstraat): In 1529 the construction of this leaning, crooked and unfinished tower started. The intention was that a new church would rise next to the Oldehove to replace the old St. Vitus church, but that never happened. Master builder Jacob van Aken was not having it easy, because the tower began to lean even during construction. Attempts were made to continue building on the leaning substructure at right angles, but unfortunately this did not lead to the desired result. The construction was stopped in 1533 and never resumed. The tower should have been 120 metres high. The tower never had any special functions. Nevertheless, the tower has become one of the most important symbols of the city of Leeuwarden. The people of Leeuwarden are proud of their Oldehove. "If I don't see the Oldehove I'll feel uncomfortable" is a well-known saying in the city dialect.
