At 382 m long and 124 m wide, this vessel is the largest in the world. The Pioneering Spirit can lift and transport large platforms of up to 48,000 tons from their pedestals in a single pass. The vessel can also lay pipelines with diameters from 6 to 68 inches for oil and gas transport at depths of up to 3,500 m at a speed of over seven kilometers per day.
The vessel was brought from the shipyard in Korea to Rotterdam in 2014 for completion. On January 8, 2015, it arrived in Alexiahaven on the Second Maasvlakte and anchored there. Due to the ship's draft, additional dredging was carried out in the harbor. At the berth, the 65-meter-long beams of the lifting system are being installed, which are being brought in by ship from Italy.
On August 6, 2016, the ship sailed for the first time for tests in the North Sea. The ship should have been ready a year earlier, but delays delayed its delivery. It lay in the Rotterdam harbor for a year and a half and some 70,000 people made a special cruise around the ship.
