The Portal Building of the Remonstrant Church. Gouda was the stronghold of the Remonstrants in Holland. The remonstrants, however, were forbidden to hold church services. They nevertheless met: in private houses, outside the city walls, on lanes, even on ice. In 1629 the Remonstrants bought a house in Keizerstraat. The rear part of this was converted into a "preaching place," while the front house served as a parsonage. This church was demolished in 1870, after which a new place of worship arose in the same place with a characteristic portal building as an entrance. In 1988, the 19th century church was also demolished with the exception of the porch building.
