The Silence Between Stops

by Retro Harbor

Some photo's are captured not only by the camera, but also by the properties of the material on which they are taken. This photograph shows the interior of a virtually empty bus, bathed in soft backlight streaming in through the windows. The repetition of seats, handrails and lines draws the eye deeper into the image and creates a sense of calm and tranquillity.

For this shot, I used a 35mm roll of Kodak Gold 200 film that was over 25 years old. The visible grain, the soft colour tones and the slight haze are therefore not the result of digital editing, but an authentic outcome of analogue photography and the unique characteristics of expired film. It is precisely this unpredictability that makes every shot special.

What appealed to me was the contrast between a place that is normally bustling with movement and people, and the complete silence that can be felt here. The absence of passengers lends the bus a sense of timelessness. The image evokes memories of journeys, encounters and moments along the way that are slowly fading, just like old memories.

The nostalgic atmosphere and the natural character of the film make this work appealing to lovers of analogue photography, vintage aesthetics and urban imagery with a story. It brings a sense of calm to a space and invites you to look again and again at the details hidden amongst light, grain and memory.
