About the artwork

The water from a waterfall cascades from a mountain into the Alps with a village at its foot. The Staubbach Falls is a 297 m high waterfall in Switzerland, whose water falls from the left flank of the Lauterbrunnental in the Bernese Oberland to the valley floor. Due to regularly occurring thermals and wind, the water sprays in all directions, which gave the waterfall its name.

Lauterbrunnen is a municipality in the district of Interlaken-Oberhasli in the Swiss canton of Bern. The village and the valley derive their name from the many waterfalls in the valley - the valley of the 72 waterfalls. Due to its location in the Bernese Oberland, it is an important place for mountaineers, especially for the ascent of the north wall of the Eiger.

Edward Theodore Compton, usually referred to as E. T. Compton, (July 29, 1849 - Feldafing, Bavaria, Germany March 22, 1921) was a German artist, illustrator and mountaineer born in England. He is known for his paintings and drawings of alpine landscapes and as a mountaineer he made 300 major climbs, including no less than 27 first climbs. In 1867 his family decided to emigrate to Germany and settle in Darmstadt.
