The Stuðlagil Canyon (or Studlagil Canyon) is a unique gorge in eastern Iceland. You will find this gorge beautiful basalt blocks in the Jökuldalur Valley. The many colours of the Stuðlagil Canyon. This canyon was under water until the Kárahnjúkavirkjun hydropower plant opened in 2009. This greatly reduced the water of the Jökla (or Jökulsá á Dal River). As a result, much less water flows through the valley and the gorge became visible.
