Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish painter and pioneer of abstract art. She began her career as a landscape and portrait painter, but later turned to abstraction, creating complex and spiritual works influenced by her spiritual practice and interest in theosophy and anthroposophy. Although she created groundbreaking works, she was hardly recognised during her lifetime as her abstract works were considered too unconventional for her time. It was only after her death that her work was rediscovered by the art world and recognised as significant in the development of abstract art.
