About ‘The Threshold of Silence’ by Elizabeth Severins-van de Maat

This black-and-white image shows a massive concrete structure dominated by a dark, arched passageway. The eye is immediately drawn to this opening, an almost mysterious boundary between light and darkness. The weathered walls bear the marks of time: cracks, crumbling concrete, damp patches and subtle graffiti tell the story of a place that once had a clear purpose, but now mainly preserves memories.

The image was taken in a former industrial area in Duisburg, where nature, decay and architecture are slowly merging. What fascinated me was the way the sunlight hits the rough wall. The diagonal beam of light pierces the heavy mass of the concrete and creates an unexpected sense of movement and hope. Reflections form on the wet floor, adding extra depth and reinforcing the transition between reality and abstraction.

By choosing black and white, all distracting colours disappear, leaving only form, texture and contrast. This gives the work a timeless and almost cinematic quality. For me, this image is about boundaries: between past and present, between light and shadow, between what is visible and what remains hidden.

In an interior, this work brings tranquillity, character and a sense of mystery. It appeals to lovers of industrial architecture, minimalism and fine-art photography, and makes a powerful statement without being overpowering.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
