About ‘Towards the Light’ by Elizabeth Severins-van de Maat

A solitary figure walks through a monumental industrial space, surrounded by immense dark concrete walls and stark contrasts between shadow and light. The central composition creates a sense of direction and movement: as if the person is on their way to something unknown, yet at the same time moving forward with determination. The lines on the floor draw the viewer into the image and reinforce that sense of depth and introspection.

This work was created in Duisburg, in a place where old industry is slowly transforming into silence and memory. Whilst taking the photograph, I was struck by the scale of the surroundings contrasted with the vulnerability of a single human being. That contrast forms the core of this image. For me, it is about searching, persevering and finding light in an overwhelming environment.

By deliberately choosing black and white, distractions disappear and the essence remains: form, light and emotion. The bright coat of the walking figure forms a natural anchor point in the dark setting and symbolises hope and presence.

This work fits perfectly into modern and industrial interiors, yet at the same time brings a sense of calm and depth. It is an image that allows for personal interpretation and therefore continues to evoke something new.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
