About "The Tree of Life"

by Max Steinwald

About the artwork

It was a time when the earth was still young and nature blossomed in wild beauty. A tree, whose roots extended deep into the earth and whose branches seemed to touch the sky, grew on a small island floating in the void.

Its dense branches offered protection from the scorching sun and its canopy of leaves provided soothing shade. The tree was the protector of the wilderness and the guardian of life.

The wilderness that sprang from its roots was full of life. Every plant and animal owed it its life and the protection it gave them. And so it remained in its solitary beauty, for all eternity the guardian of life and protector of the wilderness.

One day, however, the Tree of Life noticed that its power was waning. Nature was afflicted by diseases and plagues that its roots could no longer fully combat. The wilderness shrank and died, and the Tree of Life realised that it had become weak.

In his distress, he cried out to the forces of nature, and they heard his call. They created a protective sphere around him to protect him from the dangers that threatened him. The sphere was transparent and invisible, yet it was strong enough to protect the tree of life from all harm.

So the tree of life continued to grow, and its roots renewed themselves as it grew within the protective sphere. Its power returned and the wilderness thrived again near it.
