In this work, we see a historical scene that is as unique as it is stately. Taking centre stage at the entrance to an army tent is an imposing Newfoundland dog, clad in the recognisable blue uniform of a general from the American Civil War. With his characteristic kepi, gold epaulettes and a gaze full of calm determination, this faithful four-legged companion embodies the unconditional loyalty and courage that the Northerners so desperately needed at the time.
The historical setting takes us back to the years 1861–1865. The Northerners, better known as the Union, fought under the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln to preserve the United States and abolish slavery. Whilst the Confederates from the South relied on their agricultural economy, the Union drew strength from a robust industrial base, an extensive railway network and an unshakeable ideology of unity and freedom. In the background of the photograph, camp life comes to life: horses stand at the ready, soldiers gather round a steaming kettle and strategic maps lie laid out on the wooden table. This artwork combines the raw, historical atmosphere of an army camp with a generous dose of character and humour through the introduction of this furry commander. It is a beautiful, narrative piece that will appeal to both history enthusiasts and the dog-loving community, perfect for a prominent spot on the wall.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
