It is Sunday evening, 15 June 2023, and we are heading for Engelsmanplaat with 'De Gebroeders Luden (old Lifeboat of the KNZHRM). It is descending tide, which means we can moor at the beach of this sandbar around 21:30.
Once we arrived, a set of stairs guided us into the water where we then had to walk several dozen metres up to our knees through the water to get to shore. This was quite an adventure in itself.
Once on land, we had about an hour to photograph. How wonderful to be able to stand in the middle of the Wadden Sea like this and enjoy the vastness it has to offer us. Neyt as the sun disappeared behind the horizon, it coloured beautifully as seen in the picture.
In the distance, we see the Wadwachtpost, they take stock of breeding birds and count resting birds. They also keep an eye out to ensure the tranquillity of birds and seals. So we stayed at an appropriate distance.
Then it was 10:30pm and time to climb back on board via the ladder slanting against the ship. We set off again with all photographers on board and watched the island slowly disappear from our field of vision.
It was unforgettable and breathtaking evening that I would love to do again.
