About the artwork

This painting captures a woman lost in thought, her melancholy gaze inviting the viewer into her world of reflection. Eight vividly coloured crow-like birds perch delicately yet prominently on her head, their forms intricate and striking. The birds represent the worries and burdens she carries – each one represents a different concern that won't go away. Crows have long been associated with thought, memory and transformation in various mythologies, and they mirror the complexity of her emotions.
The woman's eyes are downcast, shadowed by sorrow, and the vivid hues of the birds create a visual and emotional tension. The bright colours of the birds show how there's a big difference between the quiet turmoil inside her and the vibrant chaos of life's responsibilities. They're there, but you can't quite put your finger on it. It shows how these concerns have become part of who she is.
I was inspired to create this piece by my fascination with how nature can mirror human emotion. Birds, especially crows, are smart creatures, often misjudged, just like the intricacies of human concerns. The birds show us that we're all connected to something bigger – the universal experience of facing life's challenges.
This work is a reminder to reflect on the burdens we all carry, to acknowledge their weight, and to recognise the resilience in doing so. It encourages us to see beauty in the struggle, to make space for our own concerns, and, like the birds, to find balance between the heaviness of the mind and the hope for transformation.
