Every year in the dry season, the people of Kompong Cham build a bridge made entirely of bamboo to link the town to the island of Koh Paen. This masterpiece of traditional engineering spans several hundred metres and can support both pedestrians and mopeds. Handcrafted from thousands of intertwined bamboo stalks, it offers a unique crossing of the Mekong. But as soon as the rainy season approaches, the bridge is dismantled to prevent it being swept away by the river's powerful current. This cycle repeats itself every year, testifying to the skill and ingenuity of the local craftsmen. Once an essential passageway for villagers, it is now a popular tourist attraction, offering a fascinating insight into Cambodian traditions. Crossing this bridge is a unique sensation, somewhere between stability and lightness, with the sound of bamboo crackling underfoot. A must-see experience for anyone visiting Kompong Cham.
