About ‘The evening school, Gerard Dou, ca. 1660 - ca. 1665’
In a dark room, a schoolmaster, admonishingly, raises his finger against a boy in the shade, while a girl, concentrated in bright candlelight, gives up her lesson. In this way the light gets a connotation as the light of the mind. Here Dou shows how skilfully he can paint artificial light, with no less than four different light sources.
