Tips for use

About ‘The famous Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik’ by KC Photography

The famous Hallgrímskirkja church in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. The church is named after the cleric Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1675), who is considered the country's greatest hymn writer through his Passíusálmar ("Songs of the Passion"). At 74.5 metres, this is Iceland's tallest church building. Its location near Reykjavik's old town and its visibility from the wider area make the church one of Reykjavik's best-known symbols. Although it is by far the largest church in the country, it is not the Hallgrímskirkja that is the cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland, but the Dómkirkja, also in Reykjavik. Construction of the Hallgrímskirkja began in 1945 and was completed 41 years later, in 1986. During the work, the design was criticised as an old-fashioned mishmash of styles. The Hallgrímskirkja is Samúelsson's last work and is considered his most important structure. He did not live to see its completion.
